Selection criteria for the Fast Fifty

The selection of this year's Fast Fifty sample is different to previous years: we've still used The Lawyer UK top 100 (by turnover) as a starting point, but have whittled the list down to our fifty purely on website merit.  This is fairer on the web teams involved, enabling their work to be given light even if their fee-earning colleagues haven't kept up with their peers.

So the turnover growth selection process of previous years has been replaced by a two-stage system. We've used a lighter version of our near-90 point scoring system to eliminate half the UK 100, and then revisited the surviving 50 firms to complete the ranking.

This new approach means the winning websites are the best of the UK top 100 and rated independently of financial performance.

The Fast Fifty sample

The 2009 sample is listed alphabetically below. All firms - except one - have been drawn from The Lawyer UK top 100. The odd one out is DLA Piper, viewed as an Anglo/US firm because of its reporting structure, but recognising its strong British heritage we've restored the firm to the top 100.

This list mixes firms that have little in common apart from their size, so we've used Legal Week's classification to organise firms into more meaningful sub groups.
